Our Community Outreach Projects
CSR Christmas Event with CENAM members
December 2018
On 21 December, our Community Outreach Committee and China Desk collaborated with the Chinese Enterprises Association of Malaysia (CENAM) to co-organise and host a Christmas Party at Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah. This event also saw the participation of large Chinese multinationals who donated many items to the home, including food supplies, stationery and school-related items, and even computers. Other than donations in kind, they and the Firm also made cash donations of approximately RM18,000 to the home as well.
Our colleagues who attended the party got to spend a joyful morning with the children playing games, watched the antics of a clown performance and did some creative activities like colouring and Play-Doh shaping, followed by a catered lunch at the centre's spacious canteen.
WP at Small Wheelathon 2018 Charity Run
December 2018
On 2 December, the Firm was one of the many corporate sponsors who participated in the 2018 Small Wheelathon. The event was organized by We Care Journey, a non-profit organization that raises awareness, provides support and even funding to families with children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) disabilities. The event was also held in conjunction with International Day of Person with Disability (IDPD), at the starting point of Plaza Arkadia, Desa ParkCity. About 30 WP employees and family members took part, choosing to either pedal, walk or run (or just lounge in baby strollers) for 5km or a shorter route for the wee kids.
The theme for this year’s IDPD was “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality,” and the wheelathon fully embodies this theme. The Firm donated RM10,000 to causes championed by We Care Journey, which supports the #righttohealth and #righttolife for children with SMA disabilities. The wheelathon was officiated by Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh, and Deputy MITI Minister Dr. Ong Kian Ming.

Hands of Hope Sponsorship and Charity Musical Concert
September 2017
In September, the Firm contributed to the Hands of Hope fundraising concert, for their 'Sponsor-A-Child' Project which enabled refugee children receiving quality education. As the Firm believes in the transformational power of education, we decided to sponsor a full year's education for two children from the Chin ethnic group of Myanmar. Hands of Hope were kind enough to provide us with 10 free concert passes to the "Behind My Smile" musical. The musical depicted the harsh reality of refugees who are cheated by gangsters in an attempt to keep their faith, while escaping prosecution. The musical served as an impactful reminder of the everyday hardships and helplessness suffered by marginalised communities, especially refugees and victims of war.

Donation of Old Computers to Methodist Girl's School
July 2017
In July 2017, the firm donated 10 desktop units to the Methodist Girls' School Kuala Lumpur (MGSKL) to replace their aging computers. Our general manager Rizal Abdul Azis presented them to the school principal, Madam Rosemand A. Lawrence together with the school’s PTA chairperson and PTA members. Prior to the handover ceremony, the team was given a school tour and we visited their classroom, science laboratory, computer room and the library. MGSKL is one of the oldest schools in Malaysia, and was established in 1896. The principal shared with us the challenges they faced throughout the years and also some of the recent work that they have successfully carried out.
Our Long Term Volunteer Projects: Soup Kitchen and Rohingya Tuition Initiatives
In the past year, the Firm has been sending volunteers to two of our long term volunteer projects. We join the good people at the Fungates Superflow Foundation (FSF) soup kitchen in Jinjang to provide hot meals to under-privileged members of society. A typical weekend volunteering would comprise of kitchen prep work, cooking, serving lunch and helping to clean up the premises. In the second half of the year, we also donated food to the kitchen and plan to continue this project in 2018.
The second long term project that the Firm is doing is providing free weekend tuition to the students at the Pelangi Kasih informal school in Selayang Baru, which was set up by a nonprofit organisation to provide education to Rohingya refugee children. We provide English writing and conversation classes, as well as Math classes for the children.
Tesco Walk for Kids 2017
26 February 2017
Some of our colleagues and their families joined a few hundred school kids, teachers and parents at the Tesco Walk For Kids 2017 event on 26 Feb. Despite the wet and gloom, everyone was in high spirits at Desa Park City and walked away with goodie bags after finishing the 2.3km walk. 100% of the proceeds from the registration and sponsorship of the event will be donated by Tesco to the adopted schools for meals, extra tuition, and upgrading of school facilities under the program.
Ringing in Christmas Early
17 - 18 December 2016
Some of our staff, led by partner Yong Hsian Siong, gathered to spread some Christmas cheer to children undergoing treatment at the Ronald McDonald House Charities, located in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital on 17 December. They were Santa Claus proxies for the day as they handed out goodie bags, household groceries and Pokemon stuffed toys to the children, which were all donated through two fundraising rounds in the office. Despite the downpour, the children were duly entertained by the clown and nobody left empty handed that afternoon. The following day, our staff Ganesan Torosamy and Kellie Yap also brought along some household goodies as a donation to Cornerstone Orphanage, in Semenyih. They spent a day of games and fun with the children, and gave out Christmas presents based on the children’s wishlist, which were privately donated by other parties.
Supporting awareness against gender-based violence in the White Ribbon Run
27 November 2016
For the second consecutive year in a row, the Firm was a partner and sponsor at the White Ribbon Run 2016, an annual awareness campaign that is organised by All Women’s Action Society (AWAM). This year’s run and walk took place on 27 November, at Desa Park City, where we sent 30 of our staff to run for a worthy cause. Despite the rain and wet roads, our runners braved the weather in the 3km and 7km categories and also took part in the planking competitions!
The White Ribbon signifies awareness against gender based violence, especially by men and boys, and we are proud to be associated with this campaign again. In 2015, besides the run, we also spoke at their public forum and radio interviews to provide a legal perspective on dealing with the thorny issue of gender violence.
