Biography
Raymond is a partner in the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group at Wong & Partners. Raymond's practice focus is on advising clients on intellectual property (IP) matters, in particular on IP enforcement, trademark prosecution, patent, copyright and trademark infringement, and passing off. Apart from contentious IP matters, Raymond is also experienced in various dispute resolution matters involving commercial, employment, defamation, corporate and shareholder disputes.
Raymond is named Next Generation Partner for Intellectual Property in Legal 500 Asia Pacific with clients commending him as "able to give on-the-spot advice on a critical situation" and "make things clear for us so that we know what the next steps are". He has also been recognised by Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific as a Future Star in the area of Intellectual Property.
Practice Focus
Raymond handles all aspects of IP matters concerning patent, trade mark, copyright, registered designs, trade secrets and confidential information. His portfolio includes enforcement and litigation in relation to IP infringement, passing off and anti-counterfeiting actions. In respect of civil litigation, he handles all aspects of commercial disputes, torts (including negligence, misrepresentation, nuisance and defamation), employment disputes, disputes arising from and/or relating to winding-up, breach of directors’ duties, liquidation, commercial and shareholders’ disputes, defamation and a variety of contentious matters. He is also experienced in obtaining ex parte injunctions, Mareva injunctions, Anton Piller orders and other interim reliefs.
Representative Legal Matters
- Successfully represented the Malaysian subsidiary of a Big Tech company in defending a patent infringement suit filed by a local Malaysian entity involving Bluetooth pairing technology and invalidating the same patent.
- Successfully represented a national oil and gas company in defending against a claim of patent infringement wherein the Plaintiff sought for damages exceeding USD 150 million and invalidating the patent asserted.
- Successfully represented a pharmaceutical and life sciences company in defending a suit which seeks to invalidate one of the granted claims of the Client’s Malaysian patent.
- Successfully represented a global logistics services company in respect of a claim against the Client’s former employees for their misappropriation and misuse of confidential information belonging to the Client. In this matter, we successfully secured and executed a delivery-up order as well as an interim injunction against the Defendants.
- Successfully assisted an American manufacturer and multi-level marketing distributor of consumer goods in respect of the takedown of numerous infringing listings on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and Lazada, as well as the issuance of cease-and-desist letters to the sellers to secure their undertaking to not continue their infringing activities on the Internet.
- Successfully represented a leading multinational automotive company in obtaining urgent interim injunctive relief to prevent the dissemination and misuse of confidential information in a dispute involving breaches of confidentiality, contract, and data protection obligations arising from the misappropriation of highly sensitive human resources, strategic, and employee data by a departing employee.
- Assisted and advised the Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries on a potential dispute in relation to a potential passing off action.
- Representing a multinational insurance group and its related entities in defending a high-value civil claim exceeding MYR 3 billion brought by a local company, arising from a Federal Court decision concerning the disposal of shares in its Malaysian business. The dispute was successfully resolved through amicable settlement.
- Represented a Malaysian private investment holding company in a multi-million dispute arising from the acquisition of shares in a manufacturing company. We successfully secured an urgent stay of execution following an adverse Court of Appeal decision pending Federal Court proceedings, which facilitated negotiations and culminated in a global settlement resolving multiple disputes between former business partners and their related entities.
- Acting for a textile company in High Court proceedings involving claims for trademark infringement, passing off, copyright infringement and unlawful interference with trade. We have successfully obtained judgment in default of appearance against individuals operating a competing business after they failed to participate in the proceedings and avoided service of court documents.
